Problem: since most computers have a dynamic IP address that changes periodically, it is not possible to locate that computer from the Internet.

Dynamic DNS (ddns) is a method, protocol, or network service that provides the capability for a networked device, such as a router or computer system, to notify a domain name server to change, in real time, the active DNS configuration of its configured hostnames, addresses or other information stored in DNS. In other words, if a user's non-static IP address gets changed, because a hostname has been assigned to that user, other DNS servers will be able to locate the user's system even at the new address. (Wikipedia).

Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) do not provide a static IP address to their clients.  Instead, they offer an IP address that they change either daily or weekly.  This type of service is known as DHCP and the ISPs do this on the claim that they'll run out of IP addresses for their clients.   However, another common reason is to eliminate the end users ability to host their own services which can offer websites, e-mail services, DNS, remote file sharing services, etc. on the ISP network.  Many ISPs have even written into their contracts that one cannot host such services on the network.  Net Easy advises that one review their contracts and terms of use agreements prior to signing up with ISPs.

The fact that the IP address is always changing creates problems for the local machine to be effectively accessed from the Internet.  It also creates a problem which prevents the proper DNS records from being maintained so that a domain name cannot be linked to the local system to operate websites, e-mail servers, etc.

Another effect is the ability to limit the end user from operating their own Voice Over IP telephone services which often allows for reduced rate and even free calling to others in the world.  For example: Net Easy has linked multiple phone systems for companies to call between states and even countries for free over the Internet.  Software and hardware for such services are readily available for free use with the technical ability.

Below are a few examples of the many possible reasons one might desire to have access to their machine:

  1. To connect to your computer via Remote Desktop Connection or VNC and access your files
  2. To stream audio and video from your media server to any location in the world
  3. To setup your own FTP server , website or e-mail server
  4. To keep Virtual Private Network (VPN) links operational

Net Easy offers a solution - a Dynamic DNS service (DDNS)

The solution is to setup Dynamic DNS (ddns) with a service provider such as Net Easy, whereby your computer keeps track of what its current IP address is and notifies the Net Easy DNS Servers whenever it changes.   Thus, when connecting to your computer, you would either type in the domain name or you would ping an assigned domain name to find the current IP address.  Thus, achieving the direct Internet location of the machines whether they're at the office, home or even mobile machines.
