Non-Profit Technology Discounts

Non-profits need to take advantage of the steep discounts available to them in technology purchases.

Many non-profit organizations are unaware of the discounts available to them when they make technology purchases, such as software and hardware. Many companies offer discounts directly to non-profits, while there are also companies such as TechSoup which provides services for non-profit organizations.

Microsoft

Microsoft’s program for non-profits is called Microsoft Open License for Charities.

With the Microsoft Open License for Charities program, eligible nonprofit organizations can acquire multiple software licenses—rather than multiple software packages—at reduced prices. Your organization needs to purchase only one complete software package and enough licenses to cover the remaining number of computers.

You must first verify that your organization qualifies for the program. Eligibility requirements may be found on Microsoft’s site. Most of Microsoft’s software is available through the program. To purchase software, contact an eligible Microsoft reseller, a list of whom may be downloaded from this page.

Adobe

Adobe’s flagship product is the Creative Suite 3 (available as a single suite or individual components such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks). Information on Adobe solutions for non-profits may be found on its website.

Adobe provides software solutions that can help nonprofit organizations get the most out of their time, money, and personnel. The Adobe® Open Options Nonprofit Licensing Program provides an ideal way to make this software affordable. Whether an organization wants to deliver services, spread its message, or raise funds, Adobe has software that is up to the task.

To qualify for Adobe’s non-profit license, US organizations must be qualified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) organizations or specific 509 organizations. To purchase products under this licensing program, non-profit organizations should contact an authorized non-profit and academic reseller, a list of which may be found here.

TechSoup

TechSoup, based in San Francisco, CA,  provides a variety of technology services for nonprofits, such as news and articles, discussion forums, and discounted and donated technology products.

Powered by CompuMentor, one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit technology assistance agencies, TechSoup.org offers nonprofits a one-stop resource for technology needs by providing free information, resources, and support. In addition to online information and resources, we offer a product philanthropy service called TechSoup Stock. Here, nonprofits can access donated and discounted technology products, generously provided by corporate and nonprofit technology partners.

After registering yourself and your organization, you’ll be able to apply for donated products at the lowest possible price. Some examples:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (retail value $1,019) is available for an administrative fee of $40
  • Cisco ASA 5510 Security Plus Appliance (retail value $4495) is available for an administrative fee of $360.
  • Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional (retail value $449) is available for an administrative fee of $45.
  • Microsoft Office 2007 Standard (retail value $399) is available for an administrative fee of $20.

While not exhaustive by any means, these options provide non-profit organizations with the means to get the software they need at very affordable prices.
